Occupy Calgary and I would like to gratefully acknowledge the wonderful support of Pizza Bob’s and Bernie Doucette who threw a fabulous fundraiser for Occupy on Wednesday Nov 16.
Bob Collins is a man famous for his delicious pizza with homemade crusts and sauce and the best, freshest toppings. On Wednesday night he went out of his way to make Occupiers feel welcome. He gave away a lot of free pizza and expressed his support in every possible way. Bernie Doucette, a popular and talented local musician provided entertainment at no charge. Bernie played guitar and sang accompanied by Brian Rank on djembe.
The atmosphere was warm and wonderful. Spirits were high and a sense of victory was in the air. That morning, slated for eviction of demonstrators from Olympic Plaza, Occupy was assured by Calgary chief of Police Rick Hansen that if the demonstrators remained peaceful they would have nothing to fear from police.
This was a great feeling as many vocal members of the public have demanded a violent response to Occupy Calgary. Statements such as “Bring out the water cannons!” and threats of vigilante action had some demonstrators feeling unsafe.
However as one person put it, popular opinion does not dictate police action.
Thank goodness for that.
It lent a real sense of optimism to the group at Pizza Bob’s that night. For me it was just really nice to have a conversation in person with other Occupiers without my teeth chattering.
Amid laughter, great music, guest speakers and the best pizza ever, I got a chance to speak to Bob about why he agreed to host the event.
Bob told me that he opposes globalization and has been closely watching it unfold since NAFTA was first signed. He said, “We can’t allow money to run our government. Everyone is so afraid to speak out but someone has to and I stand behind you guys 100 per cent for having the guts.”
I gave him a huge hug and thanked him for his kind words. He also told me that a regular customer of his had donated $100 when he learned what the event was for.
If you have never tried Pizza Bob’s I recommend it highly and not just because he is one small business owner with the courage and vision to stand behind us, though that doesn’t hurt. I’ve been a fan for years. The food is great, the atmosphere is cosy and a jug of premium beer only costs $11. Bob believes in giving the best to his customers at the most reasonable prices.
He is located at 2610 Kensington Rd NW. Stop in for a pie!
